Genesis Cardio/Aerobic Training: Doing The Right Thing... At The Right Time
People who start exercising on their own or at a gym typically begin with an
activity that is relatively easy to learn in the hopes that it will result in
some weight loss. This activity is usually some type of cardio/aerobic
exercise on a treadmill, elliptical, etc. At Genesis
Personal Fitness, we strategically position cardio/aerobic exercise as
part of a client's overall program so that it yields
the most effective results with little wasted effort and time.
When people decide to start exercising for weight loss, they usually reach
for an activity that they can master quickly and "burn calories" because they
are following the premise that if they can only "move more", they will
see a change in their weight.
And often, their approach to doing this cardio/aerobic activity is to do it
long enough so they register some "calories burned" number on the equipment
console without any regard to the intensity with which they are exercising or the
type of calories (fat vs. sugar)
they may be burning.
At Genesis Personal
Fitness, our experience in working with thousands
of clients to achieve weight and fat loss tells us that for cardio/aerobic activity to be effective,
it must be tailored to each individual's "exercise metabolism"
so that the right kind of weight loss occurs in the shortest time possible. We Start With Testing Your
Exercise Metabolism
Trying to lose excess body fat by "just moving" in some random
fashion of cardio/aerobic exercise can be exceedingly difficult, if not
impossible, unless you really know several things:
- How "hard" (intensity) to exercise... so that you utilize
or "burn" fat rather than sugar.
- How "long" (time) to exercise... so that you acccomplish
the most without stopping the natural "after burn effect" so that your
body will continue to burn body fat long after your exercise session is
done.
At Genesis Personal
Fitness, we use an exclusive metabolism-testing
procedure with the revolutionary New Leaf
Personal Metabolic Testing System. Although traditionally
available only in hospital and university settings, we are proud
to offer this advanced exercise metabolism testing procedure
to our clients.
How your body uses oxygen to burn fuel (stored fat or the foods you
recently ate) is the first step of your weight loss program
before either what food you should eat or what exercise you
should do. Knowing the rate at which your body mixes the oxygen
you breath with the "fuel" you're trying to lose to make the energy you need
to exercise is called your Exercise Metabolic
Rate, and it is as individual as your fingerprint.
Under exercise conditions, your burn rate of oxygen, VO2, is
an indicator of how well your body is burning calories during a session and
whether your exercising with the right
intensity so that you burn the type of calories you want to
burn, namely body
fat if you're trying to lose weight with more predictability.
Knowing your exercise burn or "metabolic" rate, an Exercise Metabolic Profile can be created about
you that gives us and you accurate information on how to feed and exercise your
body smarter, enhancing your weight loss and yielding faster results.
Do You Really Want To
Do "Traditional" Exercise For Fat Loss?
If you currently someone who depends on doing classic cardio/aerobic
exercise for losing weight and excess body fat, you probably spend 30+
minutes on a machine trying to burn a set number of calories.
But does that work? Does burning 500 calories per
day cause you to lose 1 pound of fat per week?
Well, according to science, it should. But if it
did, you probably wouldn't still be searching for a better answer to solve your
weight loss dilemma.
The truth of the matter is that possibly one of the worst inventions
for fat loss was the calorie-counting monitor on treadmills, elliptical
machines, and stairmasters.
Because of these, millions of men and women now obsess about the number of
calories burned per session. You might even be one of these people, watching it
creep up ever so slowly during a long, steady, and slow cardio/aerobic
session. And all the while knowing that you can wipe out a 30-minute,
300-calorie treadmill session with one fell swoop of the Dunkin Doughnut in
hand.
The problems with this approach to fat loss are numerous. First off, it's difficult to say if the
calorie counters are even accurate. A story on CBS news showed
that cardio machines overestimate calorie burning by up to 20%.
Next, depending on long, steady-state
cardio/aerobic exercise for fat loss is relatively inefficient and
often ineffective. If you just do a little meth, you quickly
come to the conclusion that it takes a long time for you to burn a lot of
calories. In fact, in one recent study, men who only used
cardio/aerobic training for weight loss ended up with a reduced
resting metabolism. They essentially lowered the natural
calorie burning effect the body has at rest by doing
only cardio/aerobic exercise on a regular basis. On the other
hand, men in the same study that used strength training didn't suffer a
reduced metabolic rate.
The "Magic" Is Ultimately In The Method...
Matched To Your Metabolism
So what is the solution to burning fat in a faster, more efficient
way? The answer is to perform both strength
and "cardio-metabolic" training to burn more calories
in less exercise time, but according to your unique Exercise Metabolism Profile.
This special combination of exercise strategies causes your body to burn
more calories during and AFTER exercise, and your
resting metabolism will remain high hours and even days. This is referred
to as the "afterburn effect."
When you perform Cardio-Metabolic
Training for just 30 minutes or less, your body's
fat-burning metabolism will experience a phenomenon called "metabolic
turbulence". This metabolism boost causes a substantial elevation
in calorie burning after exercise. The result is that you end up
burning more fat and more calories in the post-exercise
period as your body tries to get things back under control and
balance.
