4 Ways Genesis Helps You Lose Weight
Rich Farina, M.S., Human Performance Specialist
Weight loss can be a moving target for many people. Is weight loss just a matter of exercising and becoming more active? Will any exercise do when it comes to losing weight? Does what you eat matter when you want predictable weight loss?
Here are 4 proven ways that Genesis Personal Fitness of Newtown, PA can help you achieve predictable weight loss.
Number 1: Burn calories while you exercise at Genesis Personal Fitness.
This is the main way, and sometimes the only way, most people think they can lose weight - by "exercising" their excess fat off their body. Sadly, this is only a small part of how the right blend, intensity and amount of strength training and cardio/aerobic exercise can help you shed those extra pounds.
It's true... performing regular exercise that specifically meets your metabolic requirements will burn calories. But how much? If you do the math, you'll soon discover that relying solely on exercising to burn a few hundred calories each time you do it can amount to only slight losses in body weight over weeks and months. It is simply NOT the whole picture - it is only the tip of the iceberg.
So, you might ask, where's the rest of the "iceberg effect" when exercise is used as a tool to help you lose weight and have a leaner, stronger body? It's in the next three ways!
Number 2: Burn the "right type" of calories when you exercise.
Simply stated... when you exercise, you can either burn fat calories or sugar calories or both depending upon the type and intensity of your exercise. Unfortunately, most people don't know how their body, more specifically their metabolism, chooses which one to use while exercising.
Most un-informed people approach exercise with the mentality that "the harder they work, the more fat they'll burn and thus the more weight they'll lose." Nothing could be further from the truth unless you are already a world-class conditioned athlete.
But when most people take to the exercise bike, treadmill, or barbell, their metabolism is NOT conditioned to burn fat at high "the harder I work" exercise intensities. Thus, for all their efforts, the fuel they mostly burn is sugar (glycogen).
The result - after about 4 weeks of doing this, they feel more tired, their muscles are sore, their joints feel unstable, and they crave more sugary sweets and junky carbohydrates to quickly replace the sugar they've used during exercise. And on top of all this, they've lost little if any excess body fat - usually the reason they started to exercise in the first place. Then they quit.
At Genesis Personal Fitness, we assess our new client's exercise metabolism to determine the exact exercise intensities they should be exercising at in order to "burn the fat and keep the muscle" so to speak. With the latest metabolic assessment technology, we help our clients achieve faster weight loss results from their exercise efforts in less time.
Number 3: Enhance the calories your body burns when your NOT exercising.
Burning calories "during" exercise is only part of the all the calories that are used as a result of proper exercise. In fact, as a result of our specialized approach in combining strength training with cardio-aerobic training in each Genesis Exercise Session, clients experience an enhanced "after-burn" effect in more fat calories burned for the 24-48 hours following their sessions.
This "after burn" effect is based on a phenomenon called EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) in which additional oxygen is consumed and processed by your body, which in turn, causes more fat calories to be burned... at rest. Yes, you read that correctly - AT REST while you are NOT exercising.
To take advantage of this "after-exercise fat-burning" effect, you must perform your strength training in a slow-cadence fashion and short intervals, with particular attention to using focused effort. This is why we have our staff personal trainers monitor your every repetition during each Genesis Exercise Session. It is the only way to get more weight loss for less effort and time spent.
Number 4: Eat to lose weight.
Many people approach losing weight with the belief that as long as they exercise regularly, they can continue to eat whatever they want and they'll still lose weight. But as we explained above, while exercising for an hour will burn several hundred calories and even more with the "after-burn" effect, exercising alone will not overcome an overweight condition that has been developing for years or decades.
So, like it or not, you have to modify your diet and eating habits to some extend if you expect to see timely weight loss. Again, if you do the math, you soon realize that to lose even a pound of fat per week, you have to combine your efforts in both regular exercise AND dietary changes.
Unfortunately, when most people decide to diet, they pick some fad diet they've heard about, try it for a few weeks, figure out it is too hard to follow, and then stop... reverting back to their old dietary habits. It is often like trying to hit a moving target and can border on insanity if you've done this more than once.
We've found in coaching thousands of clients over the years that weight loss that is predictable and timely is really a matter of building "metabolic momentum". By administering different phases of eating in 6-week increments, your body begins to turn toward the calories you have stored as fat more effectively. And with this approach, it is not unusual to see your body almost "purge" excess body fat at twice the rate as is normally expected.
This is how we get exceptional weight loss results from our clients who participate in our Weight Loss Boot Camp Programs. These programs are designed to create "metabolic momentum" so that weight loss gets easier as time goes on. It's better for your body and easier to remain motivated to complete the weight loss journey no matter how much weight you want to lose.
