When You're Transitioning From Illness Or Therapy To Fitness!
Think you can't exercise if you're challenged with a health
problem?
You'll be amazed what you can do with the right kind of help, expertise, and support when you've
experienced these health challenges:
After surgery or an injury, the time a person spends in therapy for
their recovery is often determined, not necessarily by a doctor or therapist,
but by the available coverage under their health insurance plan. Also,
many suffering from health related conditions such as hypertension, diabetes,
arthritis, or osteoporosis do not even qualify under their health insurance plan
for referral into a medical exercise program.
While most doctors and therapists encourage their patients to either continue
a therapy program on their own or to begin an exercise program, all too often
their advice is not taken simply because it's hard to take that first step on
your own.
At Genesis Personal Fitness, we
offer a comprehensive post-recovery medical fitness program where individuals
can safely progress into a more active lifestyle. With the help of your
doctor's or therapist's recommendations, a complete,
personalized exercise program is designed to meet your specific needs and
goals.
As with all our specialized programs, you are supervised, assisted and
monitored during each exercise session by a Genesis
Certified Fitness Instructor to ensure timely progress in all
three fitness areas: strength, flexibility, and heart fitness.
Heart Disease and Other
Cardiovascular Conditions...
Heart disease is by far the leading cause of death amongst both men and women
in the United States every year and is responsible for over 37% of all deaths
each year. Adult weight gain, overweight status and obesity are all significant,
independent risk factors for heart disease in addition to their well known
association with other risk factors for heart disease such as elevated
cholesterol and high blood pressure.
If you have been diagnosed with a progressive heart condition or have a
history of cardiovascular disease, and your doctor has recommended that you
begin an exercise program and change your diet, our Genesis Health Challenge Program is
especially for you. It is designed to help stabilize your current health
profile and with the input from your family doctor or cardiologist, we can
help you begin to make lifestyle changes that incorporate regular supervised
exercise and dietary changes. Together with your doctor, we can help you
live longer and live better!
Syndrome X or the "deadly
quartet"...
Syndrome X refers to hypertension, type II diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high
cholesterol) and obesity. Research tells us that
hypertension develops in 50% or more of all individuals with diabetes, and
diabetes is two to three times more common in hypertensive individuals than in
normal individuals. Insulin resistance and subsequent hyperinsulinemia are
thought to be responsible for both the hypertension and diabetes in a large
percentage of those with Type II diabetes.
Whether you are suffering from one, two or all of these conditions, it is
crucial that you begin to focus on improving your metabolic fitness level.
Proper strength training supported by appropriate aerobic exercise improves
lipid profiles, insulin sensitivity and/or glucose tolerance, reduces fasting
serum insulin levels, lowers blood pressure, and decreases blood platelet
aggregation... it improves metabolic fitness.
You will benefit from our Genesis Health
Challenge Program by experiencing improvement in cholesterol
levels, a reduction in resting blood pressure, and a decrease in body fat.
Research has shown that proper strength training supported by appropriate
aerobic conditioning may even reduce the risk of developing these conditions
even if you are genetically predisposed.
Asthma...
Asthma is one of the most common respiratory disorders affecting
adults. It can be caused by an allergic reaction, exercise, infections,
stress or other environmental irritants, such as pollen, cigarette smoke and air
pollution.
Individuals with controlled asthma benefit from a properly designed program
of regular exercise. Studies have shown that regular exercise makes it
easier to participate in normal daily activities with less shortness of breath
and fewer asthma attacks as well as reduces the number and severity of
exercise-induced asthma attacks.
Our Genesis Health Challenge
Program meets the needs of each participant and is based on the
individual's fitness status and limitations. We recommend lower intensity
strength training supported by cardiovascular exercises for individuals with
controlled asthma.
Osteoporosis...
Osteoporosis affects approximately 20 million American women and is
responsible for 1.5 million fractures per year. Research has shown that
strength training increases bone mass and can also help to slow down and even
regress the rate of bone loss.
Our Genesis Health Challenge
Program is modified to be both preventative focusing on
attaining maximum bone density and supportive to improve or maintain activities
of daily living. It emphasizes strength training supported by
cardiovascular, and flexibility training. As with any of our other
programs, we always incorporate your physician's recommendations.
Fibromyalgia & Chronic
Fatigue...
The medical community is still trying to determine the principal
cause of fibromyalgia syndrome
(FMS). FMS is generally described as "widespread
musculoskeletal pain and (many times) profound fatigue". The principal
symptoms are chronic fatigue, chronic pain, morning stiffness and unrefreshed
sleep, as well as bruising, dizziness, dry eyes and mouth, feeling too hot or
too cold, low endurance, muscle spasms, vision changes, and brain
'fog'.
Chronic fatigue, the most common
symptom of FMS, is a feeling of tiredness or exhaustion, often involving muscle
weakness that can make it difficult for an individual to perform their daily
tasks. The symptoms of fatigue vary widely from individual to individual.
Fatigue may make the individual feel totally exhausted, it may increase pain and
irritability, and it can go as far as making one feel helpless with little
control over their physical condition or life.
Although FMS is a very complex disorder, it has been conclusively proven to
be a physical disorder. This means "it's very real and not in your
head". FMS rarely stays at the same symptom degree for long periods of
time. It improves only to recur at a later time, over and over
again.
There is hope... Research has shown that a properly designed
exercise program provides significant benefits to FMS and chronic fatigue
sufferers. A regular program of appropriate exercise will not only prevent
further de-conditioning, but will increase overall fitness (improve muscle
strength, fight fatigue, improve sleep, manage stress, minimize symptoms, and
improve function), minimize the occurrence of the chronic pain/fatigue cycles,
and increase self-efficacy and self esteem.
Our Genesis Health Challenge
Program focuses on preventing progressive de-conditioning and
increasing fitness. It is individually adjusted based on client needs,
health status and exercise tolerance. It incorporates mild stretching,
light strength training, and gradual light endurance exercise, and progresses
gently and slowly and as tolerated by the client.
Cancer Prevention &
Recovery...
Cancer is second only to heart disease as the leading cause of death in the
United States. It represents many diseases, each consisting of a complex,
multistage process. There is no single major cause of cancer.
However, research continues to document that some cancers have much more to do
with lifestyle than with genetic makeup.
This should send us a strong signal that altering one or more lifestyle
components, such as diet and activity level, may play a part in reducing our
cancer risk. The Cooper Clinic's recent research results suggest that
being unfit (or sedentary) is more a predictor of cancer mortality than being
overweight or obese. In fact, it may surprise you that 20% of all cancers
are linked to being overweight or obese. Excess weight is particularly
associated with hormonally-sensitive cancers such as breast cancer and prostate
cancer.
Research has also shown that exercise has tremendous benefits in both cancer
prevention and recovery. Exercise improves breathing, bone strength,
muscle strength, endurance, reduces fatigue, increases pain tolerance levels,
improves tolerance to chemotherapy and other medical treatments, and even
improves digestion.
Our Genesis Health Challenge
Program is specifically modified to address the functional
abilities and limitations of each individual. Our focus is on increasing
strength, range of motion, and function - which includes enhancing
cardiovascular abilities, coordination, bone strength, and posture. It is
progressed based upon individual tolerance. The goal of our Genesis Health
Challenge Program is to improve quality of life and enhance independence.
